Helen Connolly
Commissioner
Commissioner for Children and Young People

Childrens Right to Play and Exercise - The criticality of advocating, planning and creating a range of systemic changes to enable children and young people to access physical exercise and sporting opportunities at their school and in their local areas at low or no cost is needed now to ensure a healthier, more curious and resilient society.

11:25 AM - 11:40 AM

Biography

Helen Connolly is the inaugural Commissioner for Children and Young People for South Australia, appointed in April 2017. The position was established under the Children and Young People (Oversight and Advocacy Bodies) Act 2016. In this role Helen advocates at a systemic level for the rights and interests of all South Australian children and young people, directly engaging with them to seek their views on how to promote and protect their rights and interests and support their participation in decision making. Helen has a special focus on engaging with and listening to children who aren’t usually heard. Helen has 30 years’ experience as a leader in human services. Throughout her career, Helen has taken an active advocacy role on the main policy issues that impact on the wellbeing of Australian families and children, with a strong focus on early intervention and prevention strategies. Helen approaches her work from a community participation, citizenship and rights-based framework. Upon her appointment as Commissioner, Helen took a “Listening Tour” of the state and she learned that the children and young people of South Australia wanted a Commissioner who likes, respects, values, understands, listens to and advocates for children and young people. Helen’s aspiration is to prove to the children and young people of South Australia that she demonstrates this in her work with children and young people, and in doing so supports individuals, communities and systems to place children and young people front and centre.
