Details

Aquatic facilities provide comparatively safer places to swim than open waterways, yet there are thousands of safety incidents, including several fatalities every year. Providing a safe environment for patrons, understandably, remains a top priority for facility planners, designers, owners and operators. This session will explore case studies, research and examples which showcase excellence in safe design and operations of aquatic facilities.

Biography

Kathy has over 30 years’ experience working within the Community services sector in roles within the Not for Profit, Federal Government, State Government and Local Government sectors. In November 2019 Kathy commenced as CEO Aquatics and Recreation Victoria. Kathy has been a board member of Aquatics and Recreation Victoria since 2018. Prior to this Kathy was the Manager Community Wellbeing at Knox City Council responsible for leading Councils strategic planning, policy development, social and community infrastructure, community development, research and provision of programs and services to support Council’s goals to promote and protect the health and wellbeing of the Knox community. Kathy has a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA), and is an associate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Biography

Gar is founder and Executive Chair of the multi award winning Aura Holohan Group who provide specialist feasibility, design and facility management services to the sports and leisure sector in Ireland. He chaired the ‘International Union of Architects’ (UIA) Working Programme for Sports and Leisure from 2014-2018. He represented the UIA on the International Olympic Committee’s Working Group on Sustainability. He was a consultant to the Irish Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport for over 25 years. In 2000, at the request of a public sector client, Gar set up Aura Sport and Leisure Management, a multi-award-winning facility management company currently managing 12 public swimming pools, in partnership with local authorities, throughout Ireland and five private fitness clubs. The group has been certified in Ireland’s ‘Top 30 Best Workplaces’ for the past five years and is ‘Investors in Diversity’ certified. Gar combines his specialist sports architect expertise with his sports facility management experience to develop and manage facilities that not only satisfy the needs of athletes and recreational users, but also meet the needs/objectives of clients, funding agencies and stakeholders.

Biography

RJ has worked in aquatics for 20 years across local government, non-profits, aquatic facility management organisations and peak bodies.  RJ’s role focusses on industry development and capability, bringing industry, community and government organisations together to develop joint strategies and guidance, as well as advocating the industry's impact and importance. RJ oversees a number of functional portfolios at RLSSA including: Industry Safety, Training & Workforce Development, Education, Lifesaving Development & IT. RJ holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Social Impact - from the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of New South Wales.
