The perceived impact that sport and recreation can have on health has never really been embraced by health, exploring what is it we need to do differently to align sport, recreation and exercise to health outcomes in a manner that the health departments embrace our industry.

Greater Manchester has brought together 10 councils, 12 operators, 99 facilities, 3500 staff, re-imagined the workforce for tomorrow and invested in their training, to ensure capacity and capability in leadership across the region.

Biography

John has enjoyed over 35 years' experience in the leisure management sector having served his 'apprenticeship' as a Lifeguard. He's enjoyed c-suite leadership roles for major operators in the UK including Everyone Active, Active Nation and Places Leisure., and been a Director and Board member of UKactive. He's developed and delivered a Transformational Leadership Program to shift the sector's thinking from leisure to preventative health, whilst currently CEO of Stockport Active CIC, a Board member at GM Active and a Non-Exec Director for ActiveXchange. John is passionate about sport and physical activity and continually strives to inspire others. In a nutshell, he's persuasive, challenging of convention and always with a dollop of good humor.

Dr. Baptiste Henry Bernard, a 34-year-old Sports Physician & Preventive Sports Medicine expert, is the National Record Holder in Shotput and serves as the Director of the Mauritius Sports Council. With a background in Sports Business and Management, his focus is on fostering a culture of Community Sports and Physical Activity while overseeing the maintenance of National Sports Infrastructures. Dr. Bernard's ultimate goal is to leverage sports and physical activity to promote inclusivity, sustainability, and healthier communities, driving transformative change.

The importance of equity-based approaches to sport, recreation and play to support health and wellbeing

Biography

Michelle is of Maori descent (indigenous to New Zealand) and comes from two Iwi (tribes), Whakatohea and Tuhoe. Michelle has more than a decade of leadership experience with health promotion and primary health organisations, including as a Chief Executive Officer of two entities, and has led transformational programs both nationally and regionally. In her most recent role as Deputy Chief Executive Māori and Equity for Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) in New Zealand, Michelle was responsible for developing and leading the equity strategy whilst supporting the organisation to transform its culture and build capability to more effectively support Māori people and ACC’s other customers from diverse backgrounds and with diverse lived experience. In Michelle’s past roles she has had strong engagement and partnerships with key stakeholders and has comprehensive experience in understanding strategic priorities. Michelle is passionate about the delivery of quality services to reduce inequalities and provide better health. Michelle has an excellent understanding of the machinery of government, health system, legislation and best practice in health promotion. Michelle has a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health, Masters in Business Administration and is undertaking a Doctorate of Health Science.
