Group 2: The importance of creating safe places for children to play

Biography

Bob Fleming is a seasoned professional with over three decades of expertise in outdoor sports surfaces, playground safety, and operational management. His commitment to enhancing safety standards and shaping industry practices is exemplified through his leadership roles, including Managing Director positions in surfacing and playground companies, undertaking the role of Chief Executive Officer of Softfall Testing, and Regional Council Membership for Parks and Leisure Australia (SA/NT). Currently, as a committee member of Standards Australia CS-005, Bob actively contributes to industry standards development to support the playground industry. He also recently spearheaded the establishment of Playground123 that is set to revolutionise playground inspections and auditing processes nationwide. Bob's dedication to efficiency and safety has earned widespread recognition, making him a trusted figure among councils, schools, childcare facilities, and auditors across Australia.

Group 1: Risky play approach

Biography

David has been working at the Venny since it was only a shed on the side of a road. David is the longest serving GM and Board member in The Venny’s history. He has completed well over 10,000 hours of play work practice. Some highlights of David’s years include, an exemplary child safety record including winning an award for The Venny from the National Award for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. He oversaw the The Venny’s transition from a co-operative to an Incorporated Association, which then attained charitable and DGR status. David dramatically increased The Venny’s funding resources, negotiated and acquired more land- doubling the land footprint for children. David drove the consultation and input into a purpose built new building and the implementation of a design concept ‘hills, hollows, hideaways, and horticulture’ for the new play space. He travelled to study models of Playwork in the UK, Germany and Scandinavia. David has a proven track record of building risk competency and play sufficiency and putting children and young people front and center of all decision making and play practice.

Group 1: Risky play approach

Biography

Andrew Reedy has been involved in the playground industry since 1994, having been involved in all aspects of design, manufacture, and compliance assessment of playground equipment. Since 2002, Andrew has been a member of the Standards Australia committee for playground equipment, currently representing Parks & Leisure Australia. He was involved in the development of playground and surfacing standards during that time. In 2021, he was appointed chair of this committee. He is also a member of the Standards Australia Committee for Sports and Recreational Equipment, which includes outdoor exercise equipment, parkour, and skate parks. Andrew represents Standards Australia on two ISO technical committees as an expert and worked on the development of ISO Standards detailing competencies for inspectors of playgrounds and recreational equipment and the process of managing benefit-risk assessments.
