Recognising that play supports increased physical activity outcomes and develops the key traits of skilled sports people. The session explores the potential for collaborative action to develop a national agenda for play that will embed play as a key driver of health, embrace health promotion practice (early intervention) and increase community engagement improving physical activity outcomes for children that are lifelong. 30-minutes per presentation, remaining time to Q+A.

Global perspectives shaping outcomes for play and impacts on Australia

Biography

Robyn was elected to the role of President of the International Play Association (IPA) in 2017 and is a Board member of Play Australia. With qualifications in education, children’s services, community management and training Robyn has 30 years experience working with children and families across Education, children’s services, the community sector, charity and government. In 2012 Robyn was part of the international delegation to the United Nations in Geneva to progress the development of the UN General Comment on Article 31 “The child’s right to play”. Robyn has held representative leadership roles in Australian children’s services at a state, national level and international level for the past 25 years. Robyn’s work as an advocate for Children’s Services has been recognised with the awarding of Commonwealth Centenary medal. In 2018 she was awarded the Joan Matheson Distinguished Service Award by Play Australia. She is committed to ensuring that all children experience a sense of belonging to their community through guaranteed access to play opportunities and as active and valued contributors to their community.

Biography

Scott is the Play Lead within the Play, Active Rec and Sport (PARS) Team at Ihi Aotearoa | Sport New Zealand. His work is targeted at preserving and enhancing the taonga (treasure) that is Aotearoa New Zealand Play. Scott and his team focus on connecting, empowering, advocating and influencing all those involved in the Aotearoa play system through a deliberate bicultural approach. Their work centres on the role of play as the foundation of Sport NZ’s aspiration of everyone active – aimed to create better quality experiences for children/tamariki and encourage their ongoing participation in physical activity. Ultimately, Scott’s work is about improving quality play experiences, quality play opportunities and quality play support for tamariki (children) and Aotearoa New Zealand. Scott’s background includes many leadership roles across central and local government, education, play, active recreation, and sport, and the NGO sector, with a specific focus on children and young people.
