Ensuring 'sport' is on the agenda of every school child sounds simple, but is complex, with competing priorities around resources, time, curriculum, facilities and people. Exploring a more holistic approach to opening up schools to the community, the importance of growing participation within the school curriculum and interschool sports ecosystem. 15-minute presentations with remaining time to Q+A.

Biography

Claire is a proud Yorta Yorta woman who believes in making a difference and being the change. She is the Executive Director for Asset Activations within the NSW Department of Education delivering on the $120 million election commitment to provide accessible Before and After School Care, as well as leases and licenses for uniform and canteens across NSW, in addition to delivering the $30 million election commitment to increase access to quality open space for residents of NSW through the Share Our Space program. Part of the Share our Space program is free activities conducted on Government School sites across NSW these are delivered in partnership with Office of Sport NSW, Sporting Codes across NSW, Regional NSW and Non-for Profits in NSW. Claire has over 21 years of experience in government across agencies such as Transport, Treasury and Education.

Biography

Phil Reeves is the Executive Chair of Active Queenslanders Industry Alliance and has recently commenced as Executive Officer School Sport Australia. Phil is a firm believer that sport and physical activity are powerful agents for social and personal improvement, especially in delivering better mental health, self-esteem, confidence, teamwork, social cohesion and health outcomes. An experienced sports administrator, coach, CEO and former State Member of parliament for 14 years, Phil has held a variety of professional and voluntary positions over 40 years across community, sport and government sectors, including serving as Queensland’s Sport Minister between 2009 and 2012. Phil holds a Bachelor of Arts in Leisure Management from Griffith University.

Biography

Chris Crichton is the Manager, Education at Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa. Responsible for operationalising Sport New Zealand’s vision of ‘Every Body Active’ across New Zealand’s education system, Chris oversees the engagement, investment and implementation of key initiatives into education, including Healthy Active Learning – New Zealand’s joint government initiative between Sport New Zealand, Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, and the Ministry of Education, supporting over 900 schools to improve the wellbeing of children and young people through healthy eating and drinking and quality physical activity. Chris deeply believes that sport and physical activity can enhance everyone’s wellbeing and is motivated to ensure its holistic value is recognised by all schools and kura across New Zealand.
